Lindos Rhodes

Lindos Rhodes is a picturesque village, ancient in history, located on the south east coast of the island. It is one of the most popular travel locations in Greece and the Mediterranean, because of the relaxed atmosphere, the friendly local inhabitants, and the pristine condition in which you find the town itself, and its well-kept beaches.

Thousands of adventure travelers make their way to Lindos Rhodes each year seeking thrills and the many activities that are available. Whether you simply want to just relax on the beach, dive, snorkel, go on the Aegean Sea cruises, or simply explore the rich character of the old town and the Acropolis which dominates the area, it is a great location for a family holiday, or for a couple who simply want to get away from it all.

The old town itself is a maze of picturesque narrow streets with most of the small shops openly displaying wares from unique clothes and jewelry, to pottery, custom made sandals and leather goods, and regional crafts. It’s as shopaholics dream and you can spend hours browsing through the shops or taking a break in the villages many restaurants and ethnic bars.

In the evenings you can enjoy the many varied selections of cuisine available from the rooftop restaurants which offer spectacular views of the Acropolis at sunset, or participate in the lively nightlife of the village’s numerous bars and cafes. If you’re not into clubbing and the nightlife, you’ll be pleased to know that after 11pm the volume is turned down and everything closes down at respectable time. Additionally the bars and clubs into the town itself away from the majority of Lindos apartments, so if you have young children with you, you shouldn’t be disturbed.

Crime is almost non-existent but of course normal precautions which should be taken because of something is stolen, look to other tourists not the locals. Not only are the local Greeks very friendly, but they have great pride in their village and and watch out for other guests. If they think you need assistance they will be very quick in offering their help. Most local Greeks are fluent in several languages so you shouldn’t have a great deal of trouble in making yourself understood.

Lindos Rhodes is also a favoured place for weddings. Weddings take place frequently in the small picturesque chapel in St Pauls Bay and it’s not uncommon to see the wedding party led by an accordion player walking up from the beach into the town.

I recommend Lindos Rhodes highly as a wonderful location to relax and spend time with your family. The beaches and the weather especially are among the best in Greece.

Lindos Glass Bottom Boat Trip

Mar-5-2011 By Mark

The Lindos Glass Bottom Boat trip, (Lindos Greece), cruises round the coast for several miles and lasting around two and a half hours is well worth taking. The crystal clear water permits spectacular views of the local marine life in its natural habitat. The boat departs from the main beach area, and as well as local trips, visits can be made to other nearby islands.

This trip was just round the coastline. There are no toilets on the boat and no refreshments other than what is carried in a cool box on board, so you are advised to bring your own water and drinks. The boat cruises sedately round the coastline affording plenty of views of the coast and underwater. The owner also lets you experience some high speed runs and figure eight turns which is fun. On the return journey the boat stops for about twenty minutes allowing you to swim close to the boat, so wear your swimming gear under light clothing if you wish to participate in the swimming. There are no changing facilities on board, but the warm air allows you to try quickly even without a towel.

Lindos village is about 50 kilometres south of Rhodes on the East coast. Lindos has a rich cultural heritage and architecture that has changed little across recent times, but still manages to embrace a modern way of living.

It’s charms lies in the small paths and cobbled streets and the music that pervades from numerous small bars richly and traditionally decorated with whitewashed walls and local stone mosaics.

Your main challenge while staying in Lindos Rhodes apart from the heat, will be the worry of keeping your passports, money including traveller’s cheques and other personal items safe from loss.  While crime is low, there is always a possibility that another holiday maker, perhaps leaving that afternoon may well decide to help themselves especially if you are careless.

One of the first things you should do as soon as possible after arrival is to seek out the services of a travel office offering safety deposit security.  Pallas Travel is one such office, and there is a small returnable deposit for the use of the box which covers loss of a key for example.  The office is spaceous and looked after by helpful and friendly staff.  This photographs shows the location of Pallas Travel from the central
Kyriakos apartments close to St. Pauls Bay.  Also in the photograph is the location of the Olympic Travel
office (as of August 2008).

Pallas Travel is very convienent and it is right next door to the local Internet Cafe, Lindianet.

Sadly it would appear that Pallas Travel have now closed this office and the office has moved to Pefkos due possibly to the tour operators favouring Krana.

LINDOSWEDDINGS

Here’s a very nice video of a lindos wedding, with some great aerial shots of Lindos Rhodes. The wedding takes place in St Paul’s Bay in the picturesque church shown in the previous post.

Overall it’s a very nice video from Lindos Weddings and Nikosandria and is worth watching in the high definition version if you go over to YouTube.

St Pauls Bay Lindos Rhodes

St Pauls Bay Lindos Rhodes is a small rocky bay about one quarter mile square just south of Lindos town. It’s about 250 yards or three minutes walk from the Kyriakos apartments.

The bay is a great place for snorkelling and is relatively shallow at about 20 feet deep. It is possible to dive off adjacent rocks with care, and you do need to be on the lookout for snorkelers and the glass bottom boat which occasionally enters the bay.

There are two beaches, one is a mix of natural sand and gravel, and the other is a manmade beach of golden sand. Both are relatively un-crowded and relaxed.

During the hot weather the sand can become so hot it is impossible to walk on it in your bare feet. Additionally some of the rocks can be sharp and have spiny sea urchins attached to them. It is a good idea to buy a cheap pair of sandals and to wear them on the beach and in the water. Most days and I was there I observed someone complaining of a cut foot, though no one was badly cut.

The small beach at the northern end of the bay has an area of about two detached houses and will accommodate about 50 people. This small beach would be the beach that is favoured by the local Greek people, and it is here that you would find a small number of topless sunbathers.

It is ideal for a small family, although there are no toilets on this beach.

There is a small a well-run cafe nestling among the rocks above the beach owned and managed by Demetrius and his sons. The day’s use of a sun shade and two sun loungers at the time of the holiday was eight Euros per day. Demetrius also provides a number of pre-inflated water Li-los free of charge to his customers, while snorkelling items may be purchased from the café.

stpauls north3 St Pauls Bay Lindos Rhodes

The food is basic and well presented, and there are plenty of cold drinks and beer available. In the hot weather it is advisable to drink alcoholic beverages sparingly, and alternate the remaining drinks between mineral water fresh fruit juice and ordinary bottled water. Drinking either too much wine, or too much water by itself will make you ill. So use common sense and drink sensibly in the hot weather.

The southern beach would hold perhaps as many as 300 people with sun loungers and sun shades on the beach and on low areas stepped into the hillside. Again there are facilities in the form of a café, and there is a small toilet block close to the beach. It is claimed that St Paul landed in Rhodes by this bay and there is a small church built on the hillside in which weddings take place usually on a Friday.

One thing to be aware of is that large brown hornets frequent the warm freshwater shower area on the North Beach. Don’t swipe at them. They are only interested in drinking the water and if you ignore them, they will not attack you. You will have to exercise care though where you place your hand as they sometimes alight on the shower handle and shower head.

LINDOS PART 1

Nov-7-2008 By Mark

This video from U Tube by coincidence shows the same room in the Kyriakos Lindos apartments that I stayed in. The temperature in May is cooler and perhaps more suited for young children, but the sky is cloudier too and there is always a chance of rain.

“Here’s our holiday to Lindos in May 07. It was our 3rd trip there in 8 years but this time we had our 2yr old liam with us. PLEASE NO BAD COMMENTS AS CHILDREN VIEW THIS!!” Duration : 0:9:29

Lindos Apartments Kyriakos

Nov-6-2008 By Mark

Lindos apartments quality and cleanliness is probably the next most important consideration for your holiday to Lindos Rhodes. After all you’re going to be staying here for at least two weeks, as you want to get an apartment of quality.

Please note the comments for accomodation booking as these apartments are now only available through prior booking on their website  http://www.kyriakoslindos.com

I booked my holiday through Thomas Cook online, and I have to say I was not disappointed. The apartments descriptions from the advertising were everything they said they would be, basic but neat and tidy and within 300 yards of St. Paul’s Bay. A five minute walk and you are on the beach. A two minute walk in the opposite direction takes you to the nearest shop for groceries and most other things you may need at a fair price. (Just up around the corner past the Pizzeria in the photograph).

The Kyriakos apartments are well situated as you can see from this photograph, and the front door of the apartment I stayed in is straight out onto the street. The door to the second right takes you into the right block, and just round the side is the door into the remaining apartments. The communal doors open with a string pull, and the front doors where opening onto the street are opened by turning the key fully in one direction. The handles are only for grip.

You can see a lot of the other Lindos apartments and Lindos studios in this area.

The Kyriakos apartments are nicely presented and have the courtyard stone floor designs that are common in Lindos.

The air conditioning was not included in the package and at the time of this holiday in August 2008 was 50 Euro per week. If you arrive at night, you will have to wait to pay the maid in the morning to have it switched on. When on the apartment was kept at 16 degrees C.

Mosquitoes were not a problem. I wasn’t bitten the whole time, though one or two did get into the apartment during the day and hung around the beds. They were easily spotted on the light coloured walls, and easily controlled by closing everything up and using the mosquito killer plug or by the old fashioned method of a quick swat.

Cooking was basic with a two ring camping type unit, and a fridge set into the kitchen units with a small freezer compartment. This was adequate to stick two large bottles of water in to freeze for a cold water supply for the following day. There was no microwave.

The only problem with the bathroom was the usual one of taking twice as long in there due to having to roll any toilet paper used up inside more of it, and putting it in a small waste bin supplied for the purpose beside the toilet. Greece does not allow toilet paper to be flushed down the toilet.

If you would like to add your own comments about your own experiences with your Lindos apartments you are welcome to comment and send me photographs if you wish.
